Original Bros, a t-shirt company based out in Rhode Island, joins us to talk some about starting a new business and how Big Cartel has helped them get up and running.
1. What is your business?
OriginalBros.com is a startup t-shirt line geared toward college-aged guys, our shirts are and will continue to be a mix of party worthy novelty and humor as well as some design based work.
2. How long have you been open?
We have been open on Big Cartel for just about 5 months.
3. Why did you choose big cartel over the other online services such as Shopify, Etsy and others?
We chose Big Cartel because of the shopping cart feature but the selling point was inventory tracking so that we do not oversell product. The Big Cartel shop is also pretty inexpensive for a self-funded project.

Bros learn some business tips
Brian and I have been going to some business seminars at the Rhode Island School of Design, and getting some pretty good information which we will soon be implementing into Originalbros.com. Our first seminar was on RI based businesses, and creatively driven businesses. Hearing about the steps several business owners took and the challenges they faced, along with their advice was very reassuring to us and gave us another kick in the ass to get this company up and running. We learned about the importance of follow ups with our business contacts, tricks to keep the relationships flourishing and steps we need to take to move forward.
Last night's seminar was about business plans and really nailing down what our company is all about, we learned about great local resources we can use to get the info we really need. We also had the chance to speak with two lovely young women who were finalists in last year's business plan competition. We exchanged contacts and hope to be able to provide them with some great resources we found that for us were difficult to find. Hopefully we can be of help to them.
In the next few months I expect that the bros will be re-evaluating everything to this point and laying out a strategy for ourselves and how we want to be seen and what we want to look like.

photo madness
I have definitely taken photography classes in my day, but I must say that photographing these tshirts, especially after loosing the tripod was hard. The website has gone through three rounds of photos in 2 months, there were the photoshopped image of some random guy, which were surprisingly nice but not ours, then some pretty badly photographed pics of ourselves, but finally we managed to get together and get some decent photos outdoors.
TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF A SMALL BUSINESS
So,here we are about 2 months into launching OriginalBros.com, we've learned a lot so far about business, the t shirt industry, banking, insurance, shipping, web development, you name it. Joe, Brian and I took an idea and ran with it, now here we are meeting once or twice a week, building this small business on the side of our daily lives.
Now that we have some product, and have sold some product we are beginning to look further, how to make it more memorable, who to advertise too, how do we get our tshirts on tv shows, how to brand ourselves more appropriately to the narrow market we are targeting.
Original Bros is close to ordering a second round of tshirts; this may be 2 new designs, expansion into the medium sizes or even a reorder of our current popular shirts. We are very excited about this prospect and will soon consult our customers and friends as to which direction we should go in, will that be more humorous and novelty shirts, will it be more artistic and design based, should the word BRO continue to appear on the printed part of the shirt or take a back seat for a while; how do we become more Original?
We are looking forward to offering you more fun and very quality products along with additional goodies, stickers, buttons & window clings in the very near future.
